Kids in districts across the country still experience inequity. Parents still being shut out.

Powell & Ragsdale: We Were Blocked From Running for School Board in Our Kids' L.A. Districts. It's Time to Stop Shutting Out Families

For the past four years, not one member of the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education has been the parent of school-age children. Although having kids shouldn't be a prerequisite for holding this office, the complete absence of district parents means a crucial voice is being left out of the process.

This is an op-ed that I collaborated on a few months ago with the inimitable Dr. Tunette Powell for The 74. Sadly since then, the pandemic has just made the disparities even worse.

Parents of school aged kids will definitely relate to the struggle we talk about in this piece. The inequity we've seen in this last primary election cycle received some coverage in the LA Times and on NPR as well.

The 74 is the premier site covering education news and issues of equity across the country to bring positive change to public schools.
